La ville est située sur la côte nord-ouest de l'île de Guadalcanal à l'embouchure de la rivière. La ville fut construit pour remplacer la capitale Tulagi à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. L'aéroport de Henderson fut créé pour devenir le plus grand aéroport du pays océanique, puis l'aéroport international de Honiara.

Honiara a été officiellement proclamé la capitale des îles Salomon en 1952. La ville a un port avec des bateaux et des ferries qui partent vers les autres îles de l'archipel.

La ville a accueilli tous les matches de la Coupe des nations océanique de 2012.
